Learn more about the history of TXU Energy, Texas

The history of TXU Energy is deeply rooted in Texas and begins in northern Texas in 1945. Under the name Texas Utilities Company, it was a publicly-owned holding company that consisted of DP&L, TP&L and TESCO. Although the companies were under the same holding company, they operated separately until they merged into one operating company in 1984 and their name was changed to TU Electric. Between the years of 1995 and 1996, TU acquired an energy company in the United Kingdom and a power generator in Australia.

In 1999, the enterprise took on the new name and brand identity of TXU Energy and was positioned as a multinational energy company. In the years following, TXU Corporation separated the energy delivery and competitive energy businesses, and transitioned into competitive electricity markets on three continents.

A new era emerged in 2007 when private equity firms KKR, TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs purchased TXU Energy. The company was split into three entities, a Retail Electric Provider (REP) maintaining the name TXU Energy, a Transmission Distribution Utility (TDU) with the name Oncor and a wholesale electricity generation provider with the name Luminant. TXU Energy now falls under the umbrella of Energy Future Holdings Corp., with its roots still in Texas.
